Commissioner Kyriakidou goes to Poland's border with Ukraine on Monday Meetings with representatives of local authorities
Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou will have meetings with representatives of local authorities at the border crossing point of Mendika, on Poland's border with Ukraine, on Monday.
According to a statement, Kyriakidou will visit the crossing point and regional hospital, accompanied by Polish Health Minister Adam Ninzielski.
Kyriakidou's contacts will focus on providing urgent assistance and medical support for refugees arriving in Poland from Ukraine.
According to CNA, the provision of assistance will be particularly focused on children with urgent needs, including children with cancer whose treatment has been interrupted due to the war.
At the same time, Ms Kyriakidou is in constant contact with the Ministers of Health of the neighbouring Member States and Moldova in order to have a full picture of the situation.
"As the humanitarian situation in Ukraine is deteriorating and its neighbours, including Poland, are receiving Ukrainians fleeing their country, the European Union is working on all fronts to provide urgent cross-border assistance to both Ukraine and its neighbours, with health being a key priority." We have fully mobilised all Commission health mechanisms, together with the operational health agencies, the ECDC and the EMA, to work closely with the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and provide all necessary support" to Poland and other neighbouring countries, she stressed.
"Our unity is the greatest support for Ukraine, including in protecting the health of those in need," he added.
The European Union and member states are in the process of preparing for the possible deployment of medical teams in Ukraine's neighbouring countries as well as for the transfer of Ukrainian patients for treatment on EU territory.
Part of the preparation includes an inventory of hospital capacities in Member States as well as modes of transport, should this become necessary.
Already in this context the Health Security Committee (HSC) is meeting on a regular basis and this will continue on a regular basis according to competent information.
Issues of concern to the HSC include but are not limited to the continued care of patients with certain medical conditions, vaccination issues, mental health as well as chronic diseases.
