Abortion up to the 24th week of pregnancy is now legal in Colombia, according to a decision made on Monday by the country's Constitutional Court.

With this decision (by five votes in favour to four against), the Constitutional Court allows women to have an abortion, for any reason, up to six months of pregnancy.

Until now, this was not allowed except in cases of rape, if the health of the expectant mother was at serious risk, or if the fetus presented a malformation that seriously threatened its survival, based on a 2006 ruling by Colombia's top judicial body.

That ruling also gave a right of conscientious objection if doctors did not wish to proceed with abortion surgery.
