Sailboat wreck in Paros 16 dead Another 11 lives lost in Antikythera, three dead in Folegandros Troubled by the fact that the shipwrecks occurred while good weather conditions prevailed Plakiotakis: Criminal action by trafficking rings

Both the port authorities and the military in Greece are on alert after within three days three shipwrecks occurred with 30 migrants so far having lost their lives. In the latest tragic incident on Paros, 16 bodies have been recovered as of early Christmas morning today.

As they point out to protothema.gr sources of the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy the weather conditions were good and do not justify the tragic outcome in any of these incidents.

The same sources believe that there will be further influxes of illegal immigrants as they believe the Turks are testing the readiness of the Greek authorities and sending warning messages to Greece and Europe.

The three incidents are as follows.

Wednesday 22 December 2021, first incident, in Folegandros. Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday. The foreigners on board the boat themselves reported at first a mechanical failure and shortly afterwards reported an inflow of water. The actual number of people on board remains unknown so far, while rescue teams recovered 13 foreigners unharmed and three bodies. None of them were wearing life jackets.

"Taking into account the reports of the occupants, there must have been a minimum of 35 and a maximum of 60 people on board. Weather. This time in Antikythera. 90 people were rescued while 11 died. Weather. It is still daylight. How does the boat end up striking the rocks? What is certain is that we cannot talk about human error in this incident," sources at the Ministry of Shipping say. Two traffickers have already been arrested in the Antikythera incident. Investigations are continuing.

Friday 24 December, 21.00, Paros. Again unknown number of occupants on board the boat which capsized. By midnight 63 people have been rescued and 16 bodies have been recovered. Weather: 2 Beaufort westerly winds.

"The photos show that the boat is a trimaran. How can a trimaran capsize with 2 Beaufort?" ask meaningful sources of the Coast Guard speaking to protothema.gr and continue.

But in the end they had indeed been destined for Italy or their destination was to sink in the Aegean and those who live, just to "weigh" the Greek reaction?"

The only certainty is that none of the above has gone unnoticed by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy and the Coast Guard. In total in 2021, more than 1,450 search and rescue operations have been carried out and more than 29,000 people have been rescued.

Πλακιωτάκης: Criminal action by trafficking rings

The Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Yannis Plakiotakis in a statement was angry and used harsh language:

"In recent days the criminal activity of smuggling rings, which are indifferent to human life, has intensified, stowing dozens of suffering people, without life jackets, in boats that do not meet even the most basic safety standards.

The Coast Guard, with the assistance of the Air Force, the Navy and private individuals, has rescued more than 160 people in the last three days.

I express my deepest sorrow for the loss of those who have lost their lives, victims of ruthless killers who are allowed to operate unchecked in Turkey. In total in 2021, more than 1,450 search and rescue operations have been carried out and more than 29,000 people have been rescued.

Greece will continue to save lives that others put at risk in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

The condemnation of the traffickers, but also of those who allow or facilitate their actions, is imperative and self-evident and in this direction we expect the additional mobilization of the international community."
