"A cancer genetics clinic" will be established at the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre, according to an announcement by the Centre.

The Andreas Papaellinas Organisation, as part of its social contribution, has made a donation for the establishment and operation of the Cancer Genetics Clinic at the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre, which will be staffed by a specialist pathologist oncologist in clinical cancer genetics, who will regularly monitor the relatives of patients, coordinating all the scientists needed to prevent and/or detect cancer in its early stage, it said.

It is also added that cancer is usually not hereditary. However, it has been shown, after studies, that relatives of patients who have been diagnosed with cancer, if they are carriers of certain oncogenes, have an increased likelihood of developing cancer at some stage in their lives and it is stated that this heredity occurs in certain types of cancer, notably breast, ovarian, colorectal and prostate.

When specific oncogenes are confirmed, after genetic testing, the patient's relative is followed up by a specialized medical and scientific team that aims to develop a prevention and early detection plan, the statement said.

The Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre thanks the Andreas Papaellinas Organisation for its generous donation and its practical contribution to cancer prevention and early detection.
