Emergency measures before Cabinet in shadow of deterioration amid festive season decisions taken and announced

Pending government announcements on emergency measures in the shadow of the rapidly worsening pandemic in Cyprus.

Over four thousand cases have been recorded over the past two days in Cyprus, with the Omicron mutation seemingly prevalent.

The Council of Ministers is holding an extraordinary meeting at this hour, chaired by Anita Demetriou, due to the absence of President Anastasiades, "locking in" decisions and then the measures will be announced.

This was preceded by a meeting between the Health Minister and members of the Scientific Advisory Committee.

Measures on the table

According to the information, as reported in a previous publication, the recommendations of the scientists who seem to be gaining ground are aimed at areas of high confusion.

Namely, reducing the number of people at mass gatherings, mandatory 24-hour testing of those entering entertainment venues, weddings and baptisms, regardless of vaccination regimen (does not seem to be favoured for catering venues), use of double masks in high-risk areas, increasing the rate of telecommuting by up to 40%. Some of the scientists also recommend reducing spectators at stadiums and other sports activities.

After the Cabinet meeting, statements are expected from Health Minister Michael Hadjipandela.

As officials have indicated, the scenario of a new lockdown is not on the table and does not seem to be something that scientists prefer.
