The British Prime Minister's message initially stated in Russian: "The Russian people deserve the truth, you deserve the facts."

He then referred to the atrocities that, he said, committed by Russian soldiers in Bukhara, Irpin and elsewhere,[/B] which, he noted, caused worldwide horror. "Civilians slaughtered dead from gunfire with their hands tied. Women raped in front of their young children. Bodies vulgarly burned, dumped in mass graves or simply left lying in the street."

He called these reports so shocking and repulsive "that it is no wonder that your government seeks to hide them from you."

He commented that President Putin knows that if Russian citizens could see all this they would not support the war, as all these "crimes" betray the Russian mothers of soldiers and are "a stain on the honor of Russia itself."

Johnson added that for all this Russian citizens need not take his words at face value, but can with a simple internet connection access independent information from anywhere in the world. "And when you find the truth, share it," he urged them.

"Those responsible will be held accountable. And history will remember who averted the gaze," the British Prime Minister continued, to conclude, speaking again in Russian: "Your President is accused of committing war crimes. But I cannot believe that he is acting on your behalf."
