US President Joe Biden confirmed today that he will nominate, for the first time in history, a black woman to the US Supreme Court to replace retiring progressive Justice Stephen Breyer.

The Democratic president, who made this promise during his campaign, clarified, in remarks from the White House, that he has not made his final decision and wants to make it public "in late February."

He added that he is confident of two things: "The person I nominate will be qualified, personable, experienced and of exceptional integrity. And that person will be the first black woman to be nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court."

One black judge, Clarence Thomas, currently holds a seat on the Supreme Court, which has nine lifetime members.

Of the 115 justices who have held a seat on the court since its inception, there have been only five women, four white and one Hispanic, and two black men.

Since his arrival in the White House, Joe Biden, who was elected with the support of black voters, has sought to increase diversity in the nation's federal courts.

Today, he praised Justice Breyer, 83 years old, including 28 within the Supreme Court's bosom.

"He is an exemplary judge, fair, kind to his colleagues, wise in his reasoning," "who has worked tirelessly to implement the idea that the law exists to help people," Joe Biden said."
