[BR]Smallpox in monkeys is something that "everybody should be concerned about", and the US is looking at what kind of treatments and vaccines are available, President Joe Biden stressed on Sunday, according to Sky News.
Speaking to reporters at an air base in South Korea before departing on Air Force One for Japan, Mr Biden said US health officials were looking at possible treatments and vaccines. "It's something everyone should be concerned about," the US president said.
"We are working hard to figure out what to do, and what vaccine, if any, may be available for it," the US president noted."
The World Health Organization (WHO) expects more cases of monkeypox to be detected as it expands surveillance to countries where the disease is not endemic.
According to the WHO, as of yesterday, Saturday, 92 confirmed and 28 suspected cases of monkeypox had been reported from 12 member states where the virus is not endemic.
Monkeypox, an infectious disease that usually has mild symptoms, is endemic in parts of west and central Africa. It is spread through close contact, which means that it can be relatively easily contained by isolation and adherence to hygiene rules.
The first suspected case of possible monkey pox infection has been detected in our country and is being investigated, as EODY informed yesterday.
It is an English tourist who together with his companion, asymptotic, were transferred from Kefalonia to Attica hospital in order to be treated in negative pressure rooms.
The NHS received samples for confirmatory testing which were sent to the reference laboratory and the results will be available on Monday.
A doctor told Sky News that the UK faces a "significant increase" in cases next week, with 20 confirmed infections so far.
