The bi-communal talks are over, says the new "supervisor" in the occupied territories -He claimed that they can discuss confidence-building measures with the Greek Cypriot side "as two neighbouring countries"
The bi-communal talks in Cyprus are now over, the T/C side is open for talks to be held "state-to-state", said the new "supervisor" in the occupied territories, Hassan Tatsoi.
According to WFP, in an interview with the T/C "news agency", Tatsoi recalled that their policy was built on sovereign equality and equal international status and only with its acceptance by the international community can there be a framework for talks.
He argued that they can discuss confidence-building measures with the Greek side "as two neighbouring countries" and engage in confidence-building activities. He added that they could discuss issues such as the unification of water, electricity, improving living conditions on the island and steps that would be useful for the "country."
Tatsoi said that confidence-building activities should be done with mutual understanding in any case and the TC side could discuss in this context issues of its rights to gas, electricity and water.
Varosha
Referring to the opening of the enclosed area of Varosha, Hassan Tatsoi said that Varosha had been kept closed for years in exchange for the illegal airport in Tyboo and it was discussed that, Varosha would be taught to the "Greek Cypriot administration of southern Cyprus", in his words, in order to reach an agreement, but the Greek Cypriot side was not satisfied with this. Therefore, he added, Varosha is no longer a matter of bargaining.
Arguing that the Greek Cypriot side in no way wants to share with the Turkish Cypriots the advantages of the Republic of Cyprus which it holds and therefore some things must be differentiated, he said that the time has now come to show this.
Varosha, he continued, is EBKAF territory in the real sense, adding that an initiative had been launched to return property to those who invested there and Greek Cypriots wishing to get their property back could apply to the "property committee."
Three things could be done to lift the situation in Varosha, he said. "The complete demolition of Varosha and the elimination of the entire historic fabric, the opening of Varosha to tourists and democratic behaviour by appealing to its old residents to apply to the property committee and thus return their hotels to those who wish to take them back."
In case the return is not desired, he continued, the hotels in Varosha could be transferred to persons who could make investments and operate them, adding that this is still the case.
Recalling that a part of Varosha has now been opened, Mr. Tatsoi called on persons living in the "E/C administration of southern Cyprus", in his words, and claiming rights there to apply to the "committee".
In response to a question, he said that the proposal of the E/C side that envisages "Varosha versus ports" has now degenerated, noting that a similar proposal was put forward during the "presidency" of Mehmet Ali Talat and has now ceased to exist as a proposal.
He said that during his term of office he will pursue an active foreign policy and dialogue with international organisations. He said he would fight to promote the rights of the pseudo-state, especially in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and other international organizations.
Meanwhile, "Labour Minister" and CEC Secretary General Oguzhan Hasipoglu said that the war between Russia and Ukraine has once again proved "how valuable and important is the right of the Motherland Turkey, which is a guarantor power on the island, as since 1974 when the peacekeeping operation took place, an environment of peace and security has prevailed in Cyprus without anyone's nose being broken." This war, he continued, also showed that the UNSC decisions are not fair but based on interests.
Referring to the Cyprus issue, Hashipoglu stressed the need for a review of the UN resolutions, which he argued are anachronistic, stressing the need to accept the realities on the island and formulate the two states on the island on the basis of sovereign equality.
