Health systems will continue to come under pressure, stay prepared says Stella Kyriakidou "The pandemic has highlighted the weaknesses and inequalities of national health systems"

Healthcare[/B] systems will continue to come under pressure and we must remain prepared to deal with the current pandemic crisis and future ones, said Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou on Saturday in an intervention at the Glaucus Clerides Institute's workshop on the future of Europe.

The Commissioner stressed that the right to timely, affordable and curative health care for all is inalienable and this is the European way of life, adding that the pandemic has highlighted the weaknesses and inequalities of national health systems and has shown us that we have to learn to live with the virus for a few more years. Care systems, she said, will continue to be under pressure and it is unpredictable when it will come and how long it will stay but we must be ready for it and for future health threats.

Kyriakidou referred to the added benefits in the health sector when there is solidarity and collective action, stressing that times have changed and literal approaches ignored that threats and viruses know no borders and it is imperative to be united.

He spoke of the European feat achieved by the EU and the historic example of cooperation in the pandemic crisis, adding that the vision of a European health union and collective action will help for a strong recovery from the pandemic and prepare us for future crises.

The Commissioner said that the Recovery and Resilience Fund was designed to mitigate the impact and for economies to be sustainable and resilient and better prepared for the green and digital transition.

As an indication, she said that 37 billion will be spent on the health sector and include 12 billion for the digital health transition. Cyprus will receive 70 million.

He also referred to the cancer strategy, the post-pandemic mental health policy and the HERA system.
