Tropical Storm Ana has claimed the lives of at least 46 people in Madagascar, Mozambique and Malawi, where most of the country has been plunged into darkness in recent days, according to accounts released today by authorities in the three countries.

The storm has caused heavy rainfall resulting in flooding and landslides in Madagascar's capital, Antananarivo.

According to a report released today by the Natural Disaster Management Agency, 39 people have died and nearly 65.000 others have been left homeless since the end of last week.

After crossing the Indian Ocean, Anas's heavy rains swept across northern and central Mozambique.

Three people were killed and 49 injured in Zambezia province, according to the country's National Institute for Risk Management.

The storm could potentially affect "highly vulnerable populations who have already recently suffered from natural disasters and conflict in northern Mozambique," the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned.

The Mozambican government and UN agencies estimate the number of people affected by Ana in the provinces of Nabula, Zambezia and Sofala at 500,000.

At the same time, in neighbouring Malawi, four people were killed. The storm plunged most of the country into darkness yesterday. The flash floods forced power companies to halt the operation of their generators.

"The water level is too high to continue operating, it's too dangerous," Moses Guaza, a spokesman for the Electricity Generation Company, explained to AFP."
