Arnaldas Street in Nicosia closed to vehicles for 5 months as part of redevelopment works

Closed for approximately 5 months for traffic will remain closed[/B] from early morning on Monday, January 3, 2022, Arnaldas Street in Nicosia as part of the works for the redevelopment of the Makarios - Stasikratous - Evagorou Commercial Triangle - Phase B, according to the Nicosia Municipality.

According to an announcement by the Municipality, "pedestrian access to all premises will continue unhindered."

At the same time, drivers are urged to follow traffic signals.

This project, it is stated, "was placed high on the priorities of the Nicosia Municipality's development strategy, as it seeks to make the capital's urban commercial centre competitive, attractive and friendly to people and the environment".

High criteria of sustainable urban design were adopted for the project, aiming at upgrading the functionality and aesthetics of the urban environment with new paving, urban furniture and lighting, facilitating accessibility for all, pedestrians and people with disabilities and to increase visibility by creating single and large sidewalks and eliminating all uneven points between private, public sidewalks and the street and creating small squares with the possibility of outdoor activities and incorporating water features.

The aim is also to enhance shading by planting a large number of mature trees and applying the principles of bioclimatic design, increasing the hours when pedestrian visitors can move around comfortably, installing a holistic "smart city" system, owned by the Nicosia Municipality, and undergrounding and improving all utility services.



"Aesthetically and functionally, a single space, an outdoor shopping centre will be created", it is stated.

It is added that the project implements the provisions/actions of the Nicosia Integrated Mobility Plan and the Nicosia City Centre Area Plan to promote sustainable transport, enhance sustainable mobility in the Nicosia urban area as well as reduce Carbon Dioxide Emissions.

The project is co-financed by the EU Cohesion Fund, the State Budget and the Municipality of Nicosia under the 2014-2020 Programming Period, Operational Programme: Competitiveness and Sustainable Development 2014-2020,- Specific objective: Improving mobility mainly in the urban area of Nicosia, Axis 5: Promoting Sustainable Transport and Reducing Carbon Dioxide Emissions.
