Dr Matthew Alabritis Municipal Secretary of Aradippou Municipality told the Cyprus News Agency that Aradippou Municipality is a pioneer in the field of green development. For ten years Aradippou Municipality has been a member of the Covenant of Mayors and the Covenant of Islands.

Aradippou Municipality is one of the first municipalities that have installed LED lamps in street lighting bulbs, with savings of about 60% in electricity and a considerable reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

In this context, the Aradippou City Council and especially the Mayor of Aradippou Evangelos Evaggelidis, who is a member of the energie city association in Brussels, participates in the executive committee with the aim of the participation of Aradippou Municipality in European Programmes for the reduction of energy activities of Aradippou Municipality and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in Aradippou Municipality, he said.

According to him, one of the European Programmes that Aradippou Municipality participated in was Interreg 2014-2020 where Aradippou Municipality, Pafos Municipality and the Municipalities of Heraklion and Chania Crete participated. In this context, Aradippou Municipality tried and purchased two electric pure vehicles for the needs of Aradippou Municipality's staff and for the needs of Aradippou's citizens.

Also, as he added, charging systems were installed in the courtyard of the Town Hall, for the official vehicles of the Municipality, which are connected to the net metering system located on the roof of the Aradippou Town Hall. In the courtyard in front of the Town Hall two systems of the Electricity Authority were installed where citizens have the possibility to charge their electric vehicles economically, as long as they are holders of the special card of the Electricity Authority.

Apart from the positive impact on the environment from the non-emission of pollutants in the atmosphere, Aradippou Municipality with its move to buy two electric service vehicles for two years has saved a lot of money in fuel and also in servicing the vehicles since so far this has not been necessary, he said.

Mr. Alabritis said that Aradippou Municipality recommends citizens to buy electric cars. The Aradippou City Council decided to proceed with the purchase of other motor cars to set an example for the citizens of Aradippou to switch to electric cars. Alabritis already mentioned that a few days ago an info day was held, a day to introduce electronic vehicles to the citizens and several citizens were interested to see how they work. What are the costs and what are the maintenance costs.
