Anita Demetriou announces legislative initiatives for the environment

The environment is a basic human right, That is why there will be legislative initiatives from the Parliament, Anita Demetriou told CNA in the context of a tree planting in the community of Troullo today. With the tree planting today, a very important message is given that we are greening our lands, especially barren areas, the Speaker of the Parliament said.

The tree planting took place on Sunday in a demilitarized area within the buffer zone in Trullos. It was organised by Green Shield, the Cyprus Peacekeeping Force and the Trullo Community Council and was under the auspices of the Speaker of the House of Representatives Anita Demetriou. The event was supported by several non-governmental organisations.

Demetriou told CNA that the tree planting today "gives a very important message that we are greening our lands, especially barren areas, areas that can be used in the future for families, and it is very important that so many non-governmental organisations, and many people are here, in cooperation with the Trullo Community Council, to bring an important message to all of us: That we need to undertake these kinds of initiatives, to green our villages and towns and to help the public and civil society gain the sensitivities that they need."

It is, he said, "a basic human right, the environment, and that's what we need to keep in mind, so there will be legislative initiatives from the House of Representatives."

"We are always here to support these efforts," she added and congratulated the citizens who participated.

Spiros Pamboulos, Trula community leader, told CNA that "it is definitely an important event because the tree gives life."

So we want to give life to our community, Pampoullos said, that's why we planned this event.

In the first phase 1,000 trees were planted, and there are plans to plant 5,000 trees in the area in the long run, said the Trullo community leader.

He thanked the Green Shield and the Cyprus Peace Force, because the tree planting was done in cooperation with them and the Trullo Community Council, as well as the citizens who participated, and expressed confidence that "in a short period of time we will be able to plant the 5,000 trees we have set as a goal."
