President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades met today at the Presidential Palace with the President of Slovenia Mr. Borut Pahor, who is on an official visit to Cyprus.
President Pahor arrived this morning at the Presidential Palace where he was officially received by the President of the Republic while a military contingent paid tribute. The national anthems were played and the President of Slovenia laid a wreath at the statue of Makarios III.
A private meeting between the two Presidents followed, during which President Anastasiades referred to the excellent bilateral relations and Slovenia's principled position on the Cyprus problem.[/B]
Referring to the Ukrainian issue, President Anastasiades said that the Republic of Cyprus condemns the situation, and shares the pain of the Ukrainian people, since the Cypriot people have also suffered from the suffering of the invasion since 1974 until today.
For his part, the President of Slovenia said that he had come to Cyprus for the first time 20 years ago when he was President of his country's Parliament. He added that everything now is under the shadow of the tragedy in Ukraine.
He pointed out that the EU stands united, but also NATO stands united, and it is very important that the West stands united to help the Ukrainian people to face the war.
He added that "after 2014, unfortunately, we did not take strong measures against Russia, after Crimea. Now, this is the lesson, we took tough measures and let's hope that this will offer our Ukrainian friends the opportunity to negotiate as soon as possible. There must be a peaceful solution to the crisis."
The two Presidents then exchanged gifts, followed by the extended talks between the delegations of the two countries.
