Moscow court fines Alphabet's Google 87 million euros Moscow has increased the pressure this year on big tech companies
Moscow court announced today that it has imposed a fine of 7.2 billion euros. 7.2 billion rubles (€87 million at today's exchange rate) to Alphabet's Google for what it says is its repeated failure to delete content that Russia considers illegal. It is the first such revenue-based fine of its kind imposed in Russia.
Moscow has increased pressure this year on big tech companies in a campaign that critics call an attempt by Russian authorities to exert tighter control over the internet, which they say threatens individual and corporate freedom. Google said in an email that it would study the court's decision before deciding on its next steps.
Russia has imposed small fines on foreign tech companies throughout this year, but today is the first time the fine has been set as a percentage of a company's annual turnover, significantly increasing the amount. The percentage was not specified, although Reuters' calculations suggest it equates to just over 8%.
