[/QUOTE]The profile of the candidate with whom AKEL will "run" in the 2023 presidential election has been outlined but no names were heard at the Central Committee session. the leadership of the Left Party on the basis of convergences on the Cyprus problem and internal governance "Neither Averoff nor Christodoulides" Next steps
At the session of the Central Committee of AKEL yesterday, partnerships with other political forces were put up for discussion and the framework for the Left Party's priorities was set. The target is none other than the selection of a candidate who has the guarantees of success with the aim of political change, as AKEL general secretary Stefanos Stefanou has publicly declared many times.
The statement issued immediately after the session notes that "change in governance is more urgent than ever. Cyprus cannot afford the continuation of the Anastasiades government, either with Averof Neophytou or Nikos Christodoulides. Synagermos is delivering a society more unequal and unjust than ever before. A state with institutions broken down and the rule of law more eroded than ever. A country stuck in many dead ends. And a Cyprus closer to partition than ever before."
At yesterday's plenary session, the Central Committee of AKEL authorised the party's leadership to proceed with discussions on the basis of convergences on the Cyprus problem and internal governance.
"AKEL is ready for principled cooperation with other political forces that share the goal of change in governance and a new progressive course for our country. Our assessment is that there is already a majority within Cypriot society in favour of change. The opposition forces have a duty to respond to this imperative," as stated by the party.
During Saturday's meeting, although the profile of the candidate with whom AKEL will "run" in the 2023 Presidential Elections was outlined, no names were mentioned.
Listening to the pulse...
Apart from contacts with other parties, the AKEL leadership is opening a dialogue with party grassroots groups and members in the coming period in order to listen to the pulse of middle and senior cadres, while the Central Committee will meet again to propose the candidate. The decision will be ratified by the Pancyprian conference, which is scheduled probably before Easter.
AKEL also expects the political framework that DIKO will also draw up at its congress on 6 February.
Sources from both parties confirm the existence of a very good climate and the consolidation of relations of trust at the level of leadership and senior executives, which works positively in the effort to seek common ground for cooperation with a view to achieving the goal of political change. Stefanos Stefanou and Nicolas Papadopoulos, are in communication, without currently having locked anything, beyond the common desire to seriously explore the possibility of cooperation. They also agreed to give each other the time frame for the collective bodies of the two parties to draw the political framework within which they will move and if there is a common basis on which cooperation can be founded, then to proceed to the next step, which is to discuss the names of candidates.
