Αντιπροσωπεία του ΑΚΕΛ αποτελούμενη από τους Χρίστο Χριστοφίδη, Επαρχιακό Γραμματέα ΑΚΕΛ Λευκωσίας – Κερύνειας και βουλευτή, Σκεύη Πασιά, μέλος της Κεντρικής Επιτροπής ΑΚΕΛ, Μάρω Σφήκα, Γραμματέα ΑΚΕΛ Κοκκινοτριμιθιάς και άλλα τοπικά στελέχη του ΑΚΕΛ, συναντήθηκαν ψες στο Κοινοτικό Συμβούλιο Κοκκινοτριμιθιάς.
Αντικείμενο της συνάντησης ήταν η δύσκολη κατάσταση που έχει δημιουργηθεί στην περιοχή, λόγω του υπερπληθυσμού των μεταναστών που έχουν μεταφερθεί στο «Πουρνάρα» και οι οποίοι διαμένουν σε άθλιες συνθήκες. Υπήρξε συμφωνία ότι η ουσία του προβλήματος είναι η παρουσία δυόμισι με τρεις χιλιάδες ανθρώπων σε ένα χώρο που μπορεί να φιλοξενεί μάξιμουμ 600 άτομα. People are literally living on the street or in tents in the mud and rain, often seeking food, warmth and employment in the surrounding area. This creates anxiety and other problems in the surrounding area. At the same time, the Community Council highlighted the lack of policing in the wider area and the inability to tackle the transport and exploitation circuits of migrants.
The community mayor and the Community Council welcomed the fact that AKEL is the first party to visit the community and the Community Council to discuss this issue with them.
There was also agreement that racism does not solve any problem but creates many others. On the part of the AKEL delegation, it was underlined that the problem will be solved by the proper functioning of the "Pournara" accommodation centre with the numbers it can accommodate and by maintaining humane living conditions. The responsibility lies with the government and the Minister of Interior who, without planning, led the situation in "Pournara" to unacceptable levels. Serious problems and omissions also exist in the broader management of the migration issue on the part of those in power.
