On track for presidential elections AKEL and DIKO The discussions between them and the informal list of names
AKEL[/B] is officially on track for presidential elections from Saturday, with the meeting of the Central Committee, which will deal with the political framework within which the party will move for the 2023 contest.
The session of the Central Committee will put for discussion cooperation with other political forces and define the priorities of the Left Party. The target is none other than the selection of a candidate who has the guarantees of success with the aim of political change, as AKEL general secretary Stefanos Stefanou has publicly declared many times.
The debate at Saturday's Central Committee will not focus on the names of potential candidates for the nomination, but members of AKEL's highest governing body will have the opportunity to develop thoughts and concerns, without excluding reference to names. Moreover, this will help the AKEL leadership team to indirectly listen to the pulse of the party's middle and senior members.
After the Central Committee, the floor will be returned to the Political Bureau, which will discuss the issue in light of the political framework that DIKO will draw up at the congress on 6 February. The AKEL Politburo will then address the party base, either with a proposal with one or more names of candidates, or leave it to the members themselves to position themselves openly.
Informal list of names
DIKO is also entering the presidential orbit, which also at this stage will not deal with names of candidates but will draw the political framework within which it will move for the 2023 electoral battle. The political congress will take place on 6 February with both physical presence and online participation of delegates. If there are no upheavals, it should be expected that the congress will give the green light to the party leadership to seek partnerships with opposition forces. Discussions with DISY will be pursued only in case the attempt for cooperation with opposition forces fails. DIKO officials are putting forward the candidacy of Nicolas Papadopoulos in negotiations with other parties, without, however, making it a precondition for cooperation. AKEL does not reject Nicolas Papadopoulos but puts other factors on the table, such as eligibility, support among the AKEL base, penetration in other political spaces, etc. The informal list of names includes Achilleas Demetriades, Erato Markoulli, Tasos Christofides, Giorgos Pamporidis and others, who gather positive opinions but also reservations from both parties. Despite the different starting points, senior executives of the major opposition parties express the common desire to exhaust every possibility to achieve cooperation.
Sources from both parties confirm the existence of a very good climate and the consolidation of trust relations at the level of leadership and senior executives, which works positively in the effort to seek common ground for cooperation with a view to achieving the goal of political change.

Stefanos Stefanou and Nicolas Papadopoulos, are in communication, without currently having locked anything, beyond the common desire to seriously explore the possibility of cooperation. They also agreed to give each other the time frame for the collective bodies of the two parties to draw the political framework within which they will move and if there is a common basis on which cooperation can be founded, then to proceed to the next step, which is to discuss the names of candidates.
