AKEL's statement on the Russian invasion of Ukraine

The dramatic developments taking place in Ukraine recently and especially after Russia's invasion of Ukrainian territory have already caused great human and material losses and threaten to assume the dimensions of a generalised conflict with unpredictable consequences for the whole of humanity.

This is what AKEL[/B] says in a statement while noting that in the face of these developments the party:

1. Condemns Russia's invasion of Ukraine and calls for an immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territories.

2. Calls on all parties involved to cease all actions that may lead to a generalisation of the belligerent conflict and to return immediately to the path of dialogue and diplomacy and to commit themselves to the implementation of the Minsk Agreements, which can still provide a peaceful way forward.

3. Expresses its solidarity with the Ukrainian people and its support for the families of the victims and the refugees.

4. Stresses that the Russian Federation's action to recognise the Donetsk and Lugansk regions constitutes a violation of the principle of the territorial integrity of States, a withdrawal from the Minsk Agreements and underlines that respect for the independence and territorial integrity of States and non-interference in their internal affairs are a cornerstone of international law.

5. Underlines that the continued and systematic violation, over the last 7 years, of human rights in the areas in question by the Ukrainian government is also a substantial violation of the Minsk package

6. It stresses that the European Union's decisions to send substantial military aid to Ukraine as well as unprecedented increases in military spending by both the EU and its member states, using the war as a pretext, threatens to make it part of the conflict. Instead of seeking further military escalation, the EU should play a peacekeeping role for de-escalation.

7. The sanctions that have been decided will have a chain of unpredictable and unpredictable in scope and depth consequences not only for Russia but also for the whole of humanity and especially for Europe. The heavy price will be paid by the people. As far as Cyprus is concerned, the war and sanctions will hit the economy, so the government must immediately take measures to deal with the consequences.

8. The international community must abandon the policy of two measures and two stations and the discriminatory invocation of international law, which undermines international legitimacy and allows the will of the powerful to prevail.
