In Technical Education 12% to 13% of students were absent 7% of teachers What the Secretary General of OLTEK says

Around students in Technical Education we had 12% to 13% absent and around 7% absent teachers, General Secretary of OLTEK Lenos Loizou said in a statement to the Cyprus News Agency.

Responding to a question on how the current reopening of schools after the Christmas holidays went, Loizou said the problems were expected.

"The absences of both teachers and students were expected. What we expected to see was the percentage of absences," he said, adding that "approximately in students in Technical Education we had 12% to 13% absences and approximately we had 7% absences in teachers."

According to him, "the reasons for absenteeism were that several colleagues were contacts or shocks, the same was true for students, but considering that next Friday is the start of the examinations with the Greek language course, some students preferred to stay at home to begin more intensive study ahead of the four-month examinations."

Meeting with Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth

Regarding today's meeting of OLTEK with Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Prodromos Prodromou, Mr. Loizou said that during the meeting they discussed various problems concerning technical education.

"Our common finding is that it is necessary to modernize technical education and upgrade it, which is consistent with the labor market," he said.

Next week, he added, "we will have a joint meeting with various institutions, with whom we will discuss issues that can link technical education with the labor market."

"If the right ways are found, our country will certainly be a winner, because we will have our own workforce, we will have a significant recovery of the economy and certainly a reduction in the percentage of young people who are unemployed," he added.

He also said that during the meeting, the issue of books was also raised, for which, Prodromou informed them, they are working with the Greek authorities to see the books, which will be published in Greece.
