The Limassol Municipality is preparing a sports history museum and a cultural house

The Limassol Municipality considers the creation of a Sports History Museum and Municipal Cultural Infrastructure as the highest obligation of the local authority towards the history of the city and the people of culture and sport.

This was stated this afternoon by Mayor Nikos Nicolaides, presenting the plans of the two projects, which will be erected at the GSE site and the "Epaminondas" plot respectively.

As Nicolaides said, "a Limassol, which is considered and is the sports capital of Cypriot sport, could not have a museum that records the glorious history of its sports club, the GSE," adding that "nor could Limassol, a city of culture and cultural creation, not have a house of culture, a house for the people of Letters and Arts."

Referring to the first project, the GSO Sports History Museum, the Mayor said that the purpose of its creation is to make the wider public understand the value of classical sport and football through the collection, preservation, recording and documentation of the history of sport, as well as the promotion of sport to people of all ages.

According to Nikos Nikolaidis, one of the museum's goals is to create an innovative digital library that will feed the study of classical sport and football, while an important element of its permanent exhibition will be multimedia and modern technologies.

"The museum will be a living history museum, where the physical presence of sports people in the museum itself will act as a living testimony of those who will report through their own experiences, memories and objects," he added.

The Limassol City Council has included in its 2022 and 2023 budgets the amount of €700,000 for the construction of the museum and the aim, the Limassol Mayor said, is to start construction works next autumn and open it in 2024.

The tender for the preparation of construction plans and specifications was won by the office of architect Margarita Danou (who also designed the original redevelopment of the GSE) and who presented the project in detail.

In relation to the creation of municipal and cultural infrastructure in the municipal plot "Epaminondas", Nikos Nicolaides said that the Municipality aims to create a Cultural House to solve a triple problem, "the lack of housing for several cultural institutions and groups in the city, the lack of space to display archives and collections of Limassol residents who wish to donate them to the Municipality and the difficulty of finding workshops and studios for Limassol artists and creators, especially young artists".

Recalling that the project was preceded by a series of contacts and consultations with bodies, groups and people of the city's culture, he said that the Municipality's Technical Services proceeded with a preliminary architectural proposal, based on the guidelines.

The proposal, he continued, involves the creation of a ground floor organized public parking area with at least 150 spaces and the design of the building that will include, a large underground space for the storage of the archival material of the municipality, a conference room for musical and theatrical performances, exhibitions and other events, space to serve the needs of cultural associations, clubs and organised groups, space for permanent or long-term display of private collections and archives, space for studios and workshops and shared office space, meeting rooms, etc.a.

The cost of the project is expected to be around three million euros and the relevant funds have been included in the 2022 and 23 budgets.

The project proposal was presented by the architect of the Municipality's Technical Services, Evelyn Evdorou.
