A Pakistani woman sentenced to death for "blasphemous" WhatsApp messages She sent a text and cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad

A Muslim woman was sentenced to death today in Pakistan[/B], for sending a text and cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, which were deemed blasphemous, to the WhatsApp messaging service.

Aneeka Ateek, aged 26, was arrested in May 2020 and charged for posting blasphemous content, including cartoons, on WhatsApp, according to a summary of the verdict published by the court. The verdict was announced in Rawalpindi (north).

The court ordered Aneeka Ateek to be hanged and also sentenced her to 20 years in prison. Some 80 people have been jailed in Pakistan for blasphemy, half of whom have been sentenced to life imprisonment or the death penalty, according to the U.S. Commission on Religious Freedom in the World.

Human rights advocates believe that blasphemy charges are often misused to settle personal disputes. In December, an angry mob lynched and burned the Sri Lankan manager of a factory in Pakistan after he was accused of blasphemy.
