The 24-hour strike on Wednesday 19 January, workers at Fassouriou Farm have decided in reaction to the decision of the Ministry of Labour to give work permits to foreigners for agricultural work on the farm carried out by Cypriot workers.

According to a statement by the SEGDAMELIN - PEO guild, the strikers will gather outside the Presidential Palace at 10:30am, when the Council of Ministers will meet, demanding a hearing and an explanation for the Labour Ministry's decisions.

In a letter addressed to Labour Minister Zeta Emylianidou on January 7, the workers restated an earlier demand for the withdrawal of 15 foreigners' permits for agricultural work, stressing that the work on the land in question was being carried out by existing Cypriot workers with up to 30 years of experience. According to the workers, the permits of the foreign workers do not include the main work during the current period, which is fruit picking. The consequence of the above, according to the letter, is the loss of jobs for Cypriot workers.

The farm workers warn that they will defend their jobs by all means and expect intervention by the Minister on the basis of public commitments by the Ministry regarding the protection of Cypriot workers.
