Eight drivers tested positive for narcotics during traffic checks Handcuffed motorcyclist who tried to flee for knifing
Eight cases of driving motor vehicles under the influence of drugs emerged among other traffic offences during traffic checks, carried out overnight. In addition, a motorcycle driver was arrested for committing traffic offences and stabbing.
Specifically, four car drivers were found positive in preliminary drug tests conducted by members of the Paphos Traffic Police "Z" team, a fifth motorcycle driver was identified during checks conducted by members of the Famagusta Traffic Police, while three other drivers were found to be driving under the influence of drugs by members of the Traffic Headquarters Police.
In two of the cases in Paphos, the vehicles driven by two persons aged 28 and 29 respectively, on Tombs of the Kings Avenue, were stopped by members of the Paphos Traffic Police, due to the fact that they were driving at a speed in excess of the speed limit (88 km/h instead of 50 km/h and 75 km/h instead of 50 km/h). Subsequently, in a preliminary sample given for a drug test, it was found that they had drugs in their saliva.
In addition, members of the Famagusta Traffic Police stopped a motorcycle driven by a 19-year-old man at around 9.50pm yesterday for control. Upon stopping his vehicle, the 19-year-old threw a piece of aluminium foil on the ground, which was found to contain a small amount of cannabis and was taken as evidence, while he was arrested to facilitate interrogations. Subsequently, in a body search, another quantity of cannabis was found in his possession, while in a preliminary sample he gave for a drug test, he tested positive for drugs.
In addition to the above, in another case in Nicosia, a member of the Police found a motorcycle, in which two persons were riding, being driven recklessly and dangerously, while it had no registration plates.
In addition to the above, in another case in Nicosia, a member of the Police found a motorcycle, in which two persons were riding, being driven recklessly and dangerously, while it had no registration plates. Immediately the Police member signaled the driver to stop. Instead the driver picked up speed and attempted to flee and was subsequently stopped. During the ensuing stop, it was determined that the driver was driving without a driver's license and an open knife was found in his possession, which was seized as evidence and he was arrested to facilitate the investigation.
Police recall that substances such as drugs and alcohol have been shown to contribute to a reduction in the mental and psychological effort exerted while driving and a reduction in the performance of the driver's skills, thus increasing the risk of causing a road traffic collision.
For this reason, as the Police, we place particular emphasis on this phenomenon and focus our efforts on tackling the problem through daily checks and campaigns, as well as continuous public information, with the aim of preventing serious and fatal road collisions.
