59 Presidents of Greek Chambers of Commerce denounce Turkey's illegal actions in occupied Famagusta What they say in a resolution
59 Presidents of Greek Chambers of Commerce denounce Turkey's illegal actions in occupied Famagusta in a resolution, supporting the city and calling for its return.
The resolution states that "the Presidents of the 59 Chambers of Greece, the 13 Regional Chambers Councils and the K.E.E.E., "We, the Presidents of the Chambers of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, representing the business community, endorse and unequivocally declare our support for the content of the reply of 18 November 2021 of the High Representative/Vice President, Josep Borrell, on behalf of the European Commission."
In the reply of Mr. Borrell's response states that "the European Union unequivocally condemned the unilateral actions of Turkey and the unacceptable announcements made on 20 July 2021 by the President of Turkey and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community on the further opening of the enclosed area of Varosha".
It is also stated that "the EU has repeatedly underlined the need to avoid unilateral actions in violation of international law and new provocations, which could cause tensions on the island and undermine the ongoing efforts to find common ground between the parties with a view to a permanent settlement of the Cyprus problem, in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions".
The EU notes in Josep Borrell's reply "remains fully committed to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and on the basis of the acquis and the principles on which the Union is founded. The European Union will continue to fully support the efforts of the UN Secretary General."
In their resolution, the 59 Presidents of the Greek Chambers of Commerce call "the actions of Turkey and the pseudo-state of the occupied territories, in the enclosed area of Famagusta, which are aimed at creating a new fait accompli. We strongly support the proposal of the UNHCR of Famagusta to hand over the city to the UN administration and the opening of the UNHCR of Famagusta office in Famagusta city, as a move to create favourable conditions for cooperation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots that will contribute to the achievement of a comprehensive and viable solution to the Cyprus problem".
The Presidents of the Chambers also state in their resolution that they are "in favour of relaunching a creative dialogue for the resolution of the Cyprus problem and the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of the relevant United Nations resolutions and the acquis communautaire".
According to the statement, in a statement, the President of the Famagusta Chamber, Augustinos Papathomas "expressed great emotion and thanks to the sister Chamber of Piraeus, its President Vassilis Korkidis, as well as all the Chambers of Greece for their important and strong support to our struggle for the return to occupied Famagusta".
We hope, he continued, that "the European Union will remain fully committed to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council, the UN and on the basis of the acquis and the principles on which the Union is founded".
It also states that "the Famagusta PSC will continue to support the efforts of the European Union and the UN Secretary General."
