The Ministry of Health announces that today, 8 January 2022:


  • 4 people died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 654.
  • 244 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 83 are in serious condition. A 77.05% of hospitalized have no history of vaccination.
  • 18 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an intensive care unit.
  • A total of 152,238 tests for detection of the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test have been performed.
  • 3,959 (positivity rate: 6%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 201,360.

In total, 244 patients

with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 83 are in severe condition or in NSAIDs.

Of the 83 patients in serious condition, 26 are intubated, 7 are in an Intensive Care Unit off a ventilator and 50 are in an Intensive Care Unit.

Γ. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):

Of the 152,238 diagnoses performed, 14,243 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 137,995 by the antigen rapid test, 3,959 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:


  • 153 cases from 1,065 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  • 72 cases out of 4,062 samples taken in the framework of passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  • 767 cases out of 8,534 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 31 cases out of 452 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  • 1,681 cases out of 73,232 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 1,252 cases out of 64,763 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
  • 3 cases from 130 specimens obtained under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
