The Ministry of Health announces that today, 6 January 2022:


  • No patient deaths were recorded with COVID-19 as the final cause of death, and therefore the total number of deaths remains 650.
  • 235 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 73 are in serious condition. A proportion of 77.45% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
  • 15 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.
  • A total of 77,255 tests for detection of the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test have been performed.
  • 3,777 (positivity rate: 4.89%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the molecular (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 192,157.

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

No deaths of patients with COVID-19 were recorded. Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 disease remains 650, of which:


  • 411 males (63.2%), and
  • 239 females (36.8%).

The average age of deaths from the disease is 76 years.

B]B. Inpatients:

In total, 235 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 73 are in serious condition or on NSAIDs.



Of the 73 patients in serious condition, 29 are intubated, 2 are in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) off ventilator and 42 are in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Γ. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):

Of the 77,255 diagnoses performed, 12,452 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 64,803 by the antigen rapid test method, 3,777 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:


  • 250 cases from 2,445 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  • 75 cases out of 3,930 samples taken in the framework of passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  • 593 cases out of 5,667 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 14 cases out of 205 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  • 1,328 cases from 26,539 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 1,510 cases from 38,264 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
  • 7 cases from 205 specimens obtained under the Personal Physician Referral and Special Group Screening Program through the Public Health Clinics.
