Detection of 28 new cases of the Omicron variant in Cyprus
As part of the rigorous surveillance being carried out in the Republic of Cyprus in the light of the new Omicron mutation, the Ministry of Health informs that following the sequencing of positive case samples from the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics and the NIPD laboratory and after a thorough analysis of the data by the Molecular Virology Laboratory of the University of Cyprus, 28 new cases of the Omicron variant have been identified.
Thetic cases identified with the Omicron variant:
- 8 positive cases identified as Omicron by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics:
They relate to primary and secondary contacts of the first 5 Omicron cases identified last week and associated with travel history. 5 cases involve students who had been on the field trip and the remaining 3 cases involve family members. All of the above positive specimens had been identified as "possible Omicron" as of the previous Friday, December 10, and had been given recommendations for state quarantine.
- 20 positive samples were identified as Omicron by the NIPD Laboratory and the University of Cyprus Molecular Virology Laboratory:
The 12 cases are primary and secondary contacts of the first 5 Omicron cases identified last week and associated with travel history. The 5 cases involved students, one case involved a teacher who had been on the field trip, and the remaining 6 cases involved family members.
All of the above cases had been identified as "possible Omicron" by the previous Friday, December 10, and had been given recommendations for state quarantine.
The remaining 8 positive specimens involved cases with recent travel history.</B-17
