20% of pupils and 12.5% of teachers did not attend Pafos primary schools How the first day after the Christmas holidays went
20% of pupils in Pafos District primary schools did not attend classes today, as did 12.5% of teachers, according to Paphos Primary Education Officer, Dimitris Mikellidis.
In a statement to the Cyprus News Agency, Mr.Mikellidis said that today, the first day of operation of primary schools after the holidays, the absentees amount to 65 teachers and 1,200 pupils in the primary schools of the Paphos district. He added that 15 teachers did not show up at the Kindergartens in Paphos district.
As Mr. Mikellidis explained, this figure includes a significant number of children who were absent, not because they are outbreaks or contacts of outbreaks, but because they were sick with common childhood illnesses.
The Head of Primary Education in Paphos said that the teachers who were absent have been replaced today and this is expected to happen tomorrow, so "in this sense, the schools are able to function and operate with normality."
He also added that there is good cooperation with everyone, noting that parents have responded and children have returned to school today, as have teachers with rapid antigen detection tests.
Now, he added, the baton for the tests is being picked up by the various teams sent by the Ministry of Health.
He also sent the message that they will try to keep the schools open because their goal is live education and a safe health environment for the children, while "doing everything possible, Ministry of Education, teachers, and parents to achieve this."
