The Ministry of Health announces that today, 18 December 2021:


  • 2 people died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 619.
  • 177 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 59 are in serious condition. A 79.67% of those hospitalized have no history of vaccination.
  • 10 postCOVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.
  • A total of 75,844 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test (antigen rapid test).
  • 508 (positivity rate: 0.67%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the molecular (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 144,713.

The current results are detailed below.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 2 persons who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 were.

Male, aged 75 years, who died on 18 December in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital, Nicosia.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a terminal cause of COVID-19 is 619, of which.

394 males (63.7%), and

225 women (36,3 %).



The average age of those who died from the disease is 75.8 years.
  • Β. Inpatients:
In total, 177 patients

with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY,of whom 59 are in serious condition

or in PICU.

Of the 59 patients in serious condition, 21 are intubated and 38 are in an Intensive Care Unit.

-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):Of the 75,844 diagnoses performed, 9,501 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 66,343 by the antigen rapid test, 508 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

31 cases from 5,365 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.

135 cases out of 3,880 samples taken through private initiative.

21 cases out of 240 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.

212 cases from 46,576 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 109 cases from 19,767 specimens tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
  • In addition, the following tests were conducted without detecting a case:
  • 0 cases from 16 samples obtained through the contact tracing process of already confirmed cases.
