The first dead of the Cypriot struggle. Charalambos Mouskos, EOKA guerrilla, is killed during the battle of Ancient Soloii. He was a cousin of Archbishop Makarios.
Charalambos Mouskos was born in May 1932 in Panagia, Paphos.
He was the son of George and Anastasia and had six more sisters, he finished school in Panagia and high school in Paphos. His cousin was Archbishop Makarios III.
Charalambos Mouskos finished the primary school of Panagia and the Greek Gymnasium of Paphos. After special training in Greece, he was appointed director of the printing house of the Archdiocese, where the first leaflets and forms of the struggle were printed. At the same time he acted as a member of the PEON and OXEN organizations which were encouraged by the Archbishop. With the beginning of the armed action of EOKA, Mouskos was one of the first five group leaders of the Nicosia saboteur groups and was in direct contact with the leader Digenis.
His group, led by himself, took an active part on the night of 1 April 1955 in an attack on the Arch Secretariat. He was later betrayed, but escaped capture and went out as a rebel in the mountains. He was the first to flee to the guerrilla in Kykkos, where others arrived later to form the first guerrilla group called "Uranos" and led by Marko Draco.
Together with Polycarp Yiorkatzis, on 12 November 1955, they had taken part in an ambush against an English convoy of military vehicles.
On 15 December 1955, Charalambos Mouskos, together with his fellow heroes Marko Draco, Andreas Zakos, Charilaos Michael and four others, set up an ambush against the English at Mersinaki near ancient Soloi. In the ensuing battle, Charalambos Mouskos fell and an English soldier was killed. He is the first EOKA fighter to fall in battle. Andreas Zakos and Charilaos Michael were captured next to him, seriously wounded, while Markos Drakos escaped with a head wound.
