The rhythm of everyday life, working in front of screens, and careless diet are aggravating factors for the state of vision and eye health. But there are some simple daily activities that if you apply them, you will preserve your precious vision
"Take care of it like our eyes", a phrase we often hear, usually indicating the great value of some asset, such as that of our eyes. However, we often neglect to take care of this precious organ that plays a key role in performing daily tasks and more. A visit to the ophthalmologist should of course not be missing from the annual check-up, but there are some daily and simple actions that guarantee the quality of vision and can prevent various eye diseases.
Balanced diet
Fruits rich in antioxidants such as vitamins A and C, leafy vegetables and fish should not be missing from your weekly diet if you want healthy vision. In particular, oily fish, such as salmon, with its omega-3 content, helps protect the macula, which is located in the centre of the retina and is responsible for central vision.
On the other hand, insufficient antioxidant intake, alcohol consumption and saturated fats can increase free radicals that may damage the macula - the central part of the retina. In addition, a high-fat diet adversely affects blood flow in the arteries. Eyes are particularly sensitive to this process, given the small size of the blood vessels that supply blood to them.
Exercise
Through exercise, blood circulation is improved and at the same time oxygenation levels in the eyes are improved and toxins are removed.
Wash your hands well
[/p]In order to prevent an infection and especially if you wear contact lenses, you should be particularly careful and only touch your eyes with clean hands. Moreover, let's not forget that our eyes are also a gateway for bacteria and viruses.
Don't smoke
Smoking exposes your eyes to high levels of oxidative stress. Although this association has not been clearly established, smoking is known to increase the risk of several eye diseases.
Wear sunglasses
Sunglasses protect your eyes from UVA and UVB radiation. In the summer months or when exercising outdoors, a hat is also recommended to significantly reduce the amount of UV radiation.
Use screens wisely
Exposing our eyes to blue light from our computer and mobile screens for long hours every day is a habit that can damage our eyesight. To protect your eyes, you can apply the following:
- Make sure the computer screen is about 50 cm away from your eyes, and make sure the top of your computer screen is slightly below eye level.
- Adjust the brightness and reduce it to a point where it is not uncomfortable for your vision
- Blink frequently
- Take a break every 20 minutes to focus your gaze on an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
