Police on Tuesday are expected to remand in custody the 44-year-old driver who collided with another vehicle in Limassol shortly after new-year’s eve, killing four people.
The driver was arrested shortly after the accident and was being treated at Limassol general hospital for broken ribs. Police are expected to consult with his treating doctors and if released from hospital on Tuesday, he will be held in remand and brought before court on charges of reckless driving and vehicular manslaughter.
It is recalled the four victims of the accident, which happened shortly after midnight on Sunday, were members of the same family, two grandchildren who were taking home their grandparents after celebrations.
Police identified the four as 27-year-old Vathoula Georgiou, 17-year-old Nikolas Georgiou, their grandfather, 73-year-old Nikolas Zavrou and 74-year-old Evanthia Georgiou, their grandmother.
According to the latest reports, Limassol traffic police have determined via CCTV footage that the 44-year-old pick-up truck driver ran a red light and was speeding at the intersection of Ayias Anastasias and Yianni Kranidioti street, crashing into the other driver, 27-year-old Georgiou, who had almost completed a right turn.
The victims died upon impact and that the fire service was called in to remove them from the vehicle.
All four bodies were taken to Limassol general hospital, where doctors officially pronounced them dead. None of the victims had been wearing seatbelts.
The 44-year-old and his 38-year-old wife were also taken to hospital and treated. Police said the 44-year-old driver was given and alcotest and a narcotest, both of which came back negative.
Police are continuing to wrap-up investigations into the details of the tragedy.
