Four individuals died in a car crash on at the start of the New Year in the Platres area of Limassol, police said on Monday.
According to police, the four victims were a family, two grandchildren and their grandparents, who had been out for New Year celebration on Sunday night.
Police identified the four as 27-year-old Vathoula Georgiou, 17-year-old Nikolas Georgiou, their grandfather 73-year-old Nikolas Zavrou, and his 74-year-old wife and grandmother of the two younger individuals Evanthia Zavrou.
Speaking at the scene of the accident, Limassol Traffic Police Spokesman Marios Charalambous said that a pick-up truck driven by a 47-year-old, who had his 38-year-old wife as a passenger, crashed into the vehicle driven by the 27-year-old, who along with her brother were taking their grandparents to their home.
The crash occurred at traffic light located on Ayia Anastasia Street, and while Georgiou was attempting to turn right.
Police said that they died instantly from the impact, and that the fire service was called in to remove them from the vehicle.
All four were rushed to Limassol General, where doctors pronounced them dead.
The other couple was also taken to hospital, and they are currently being treated. Police said the 47-year-old driver was given and alcotest and a narcotest, which both came back negative.
Charalambous said the family of four were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
He added that the crash could have been caused by the other driving speeding, but that police are currently looking into all possibilities.
