Worried about the Omicron mutant strain of coronavirus sweeping the world, the World Health Organization today estimated that more than 50% of Europeans could be infected with it in the next two months if the current rate of spread continues.
"At this rate, the Institute of Hygienic Measurements and Estimates (IHME) predicts that more than 50% of the region's population will be infected with Omicron in the next 6 to 8 weeks," said Hans Kluge, WHO's head of Europe.
The mutations carried by this strain "allow it to adhere more easily to human cells and infect people who are already infected (by coronavirus) or vaccinated," he added.
