The United States ended 2021 with a large increase in the trade deficit and a slightly unexpected increase in December, on a monthly basis, as imports again outpaced exports, according to government data released Tuesday.
The trade deficit rose 1.8 percent to $80.7 billion in December compared with the previous month's upwardly revised level, according to the U.S. Commerce Department, and just below the record $80.8 billion recorded in September 2021. Analysts were expecting a small monthly narrowing of the trade deficit.
