The illegal presence of the Turkish occupying army on our island for more than 47 years, as well as the continuous, escalating and unacceptable Turkish claims and provocations, require today, as never before, the need to further upgrade the defence and preparedness of the EU, said the Speaker of the Parliament, Anita Demetriou.
In her address this morning, during the swearing-in ceremony of the female Contracted Soldiers, held at the camp "Eumenios Panagiotou" (KEN Limassol), Demetriou said that this swearing-in ceremony is a huge victory "against stereotypes and sexist outdated notions of gender discrimination in the defense of our country. In a journey we still have a long way to go and very important steps to take".
