There is an urgent need for Greeks and expatriates to honour and support the Greek language and education, especially where there are surviving communities and historical centres of the expatriate diaspora, which maintain this primary element of their cultural identity, says the Office of the Commissioner for the Presidency, in a statement on the occasion of the World Day of the Greek Language.
The Office of the Commissioner for the Presidency further notes the fact that this year's World Greek Language Day is also the commemoration day of the national poet Dionysios Solomos and states that the events will culminate next week on February 19 in London, where an event will be co-organized in the framework of bilateral cooperation between Cyprus and Greece.
