Storm Carmela is approaching Cyprus, expected to bring prolonged showers and strong winds from Saturday night into Monday. The authorities are on alert and many municipalities have issued notices warning residents and urging them to take appropriate measures, while a number of events have been cancelled. Recommendations have also been issued by the Civil Defence.
The Department of Meteorology issued an orange warning effective from 2100 on Saturday night until 1pm on Monday.
It said that a combination of prolonged rain and locally heavy thunderstorms are expected to affect the region at times.
Total rainfall is likely to locally range between 85 and 110 mm per 24 hours.
