[PIO] High concentrations of dust in the atmosphere

High dust concentrations are observed today, June 3, 2023, in the atmosphere, according to measurements from the ground stations of the Air Quality Monitoring Network of the Department of Labour Inspection.

Because the dust contains small inhalable particles, which are likely to have a negative effect on human health, the public and especially vulnerable groups (children, elderly and sick people) are advised to avoid going outdoors until the phenomenon has passed.

Employers should take appropriate measures (organisational and/or technical) after assessing the risks to their employees in open areas, and workers in such areas are recommended to use appropriate personal protective equipment.

For information, the last hourly dust concentration values measured at 7:00 a.m. in the following areas were:

Nicosia:

81.1 μg/m3

Limassol:

-

Larnaca:

88.9 μg/m3

Paralimni:

77.5 μg/m3

Paphos:

-

Zygi:

136.7 μg/m3

Agia Marina Xyliatou:

119.5 μg/m3

Note that, "dust" means respirable particulate matter in the atmosphere with a diameter of less than 10 μm (PM10). According to the relevant legislation, the limit value refers to the average daily value and must not exceed 50 μg/m3 (micrograms per cubic metre).

More information and continuous, immediate updates on the results of hourly measurements can be found on the website www.airquality.gov.cy and the "Air Quality Cyprus" application, which can be installed free of charge on a mobile phone.
