Assurance that preventing and combating youth delinquency is a top priority was given today by Justice and Public Order Minister Stefi Drakou
.

In her address at the award ceremony of schools that participated in the competition of practices/actions to promote the Anti-Racist Policy of the Ministry of Education, Ms. Drakou said that both she and the staff of the Ministry and the Police, participate and will continue to participate actively in this common struggle.

As Ms. Drakou said that the awards and praise for the actions organized and implemented by schools in Cyprus are an action that shows the strong will of the state to prevent and tackle juvenile delinquency in all its forms.

"To tackle it requires an organized and coordinated effort on the part of the state and society," she said, noting that an important tool in the effort to combat juvenile delinquency is the law on children that was passed last April. This law, he explained, establishes a child-friendly criminal justice system. It also establishes alternative ways of dealing with juvenile offenders, the main aim of which is to prevent, prevent and deter the recurrence of delinquent behaviour.

The Minister said that a form of juvenile delinquency that we unfortunately often encounter in schools, but also in society in general, is racism, in its various manifestations. She added that it is widely accepted that the most effective, but also the most difficult measure to address any social problem, is prevention.

She noted that it is in this context that the Code of Conduct against Racism and the Guide for the Management and Recording of Racist Incidents were developed by the Pedagogical Institute. The Code, he continued, is an important tool for teachers, students and parents alike to manage racist incidents.

"The Government's will to prevent and combat racism and all forms of discrimination is also reflected in the first National Strategy for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights recently adopted by the Council of Ministers. It is translated into actions through the National Action Plan that is being prepared in cooperation with the University of Cyprus," she said.

In relation to the competition, Drakou said that despite the unfavourable conditions that prevailed this year due to the pandemic, a large number of schools of all levels participated in the competition. This fact proves that the objectives of the institution are being achieved.
